Stucco has been used since ancient times. Still widely used throughout the world, it is one of the most common of traditional building materials. Up until the late 1800s, stucco, like mortar, was primarily lime-based, but the popularization of Portland cement changed the composition of stucco.
It can be applied over over lath, directly, without lath, to masonry substrates, such as brick, Concrete Masonry Units (CMU), stone, concrete. The first coat is the scratch coat and called so because it is literally scratched with a tool, to leave long horizontal ridges that provide a mechanical key for the next coat. The brown coat (or second coat) brings the wall out to a level surface and usually to a full ¾" thickness. A finish coat is applied over the brown coat.
